先輩 (senpai)
Anime · 2026-10-13 · View on X
In anime, a younger student says "senpai" to someone, and the air in the scene seems to change. What does the word actually mean?
Senpai (先輩) means roughly "upperclassman." At school, it is the student one year above you.
The word does not stay at school. At work, people use it for someone older, someone higher up, or someone they look up to.
Its partner is kōhai (後輩), the one who came after. The pair is often used to explain how Japanese people sense order between people.
In Japan, many of us learn this pair as children and keep using it in our working lives for years.
