一期一会 (ichigo ichie)

You meet the same friend for coffee every month. Can each of those meetings really be special?

There is a Japanese phrase for this: ichigo ichie (一期一会), roughly "one time, one meeting," a meeting that happens once in a lifetime. It is known as a teaching of the tea ceremony.

The thought is that even if you meet the same person again and again, this particular hour will not come back. The phrase is linked to a famous tea master, and a later figure is said to have spread it widely.

Outside Japan, it has become a well-loved phrase for a Japanese view of life.

In Japan, many of us know the words long before we feel them. The feeling tends to arrive later in life.
