藍色 (ai-iro)

A deep shade of indigo is sometimes called "Japan blue." Look closely, and the color has many faces.

The color is ai-iro (藍色), indigo, a deep blue.

For a long time, indigo colored the cloth of everyday life in Japan, such as summer yukata and noren, the short curtains hung in doorways.

The language kept many names for its shades, such as hanada, a lighter blue than ai-iro, and kon, a dark navy.

In Japan, many of us grew up around this blue without ever stopping to name it.
