紅色

Colors of Japan | 紅色

Dip silk in safflower dye once, and you get pink. To reach a deep crimson, you dip it again. And again.

That red is beni-iro (紅色), the color taken from the petals of the safflower, benibana.

The petals were first washed in water to remove a yellow dye. The red was then drawn out with lye made from ash, and neutralized with vinegar to make a clear red. Dyers also pressed the petals into small cakes called beni-mochi, which could be stored and later soaked to make the dye bath.

In Japan, many of us still call a deep red "beni," rarely thinking of the petals, or of how many times the cloth went back into the dye.
