Colors of Japan |
Moegi is a shade of green. So why does its name contain the character for yellow?
Moegi-iro (萌黄色) means roughly "sprouting yellow." 萌 is to bud, 黄 is yellow. It is a bright yellow-green, the color of new shoots on a branch.
A different word with the same sound, 萌葱, uses the character for green onion and names a deeper green. The two are easy to mix up.
The yellow-green moegi is old. It appears among the layered color combinations of Heian-period clothing, and it came to stand for youth.
In Japan, many of us notice this color every spring on the trees, long before we think to give it a name.
