At high tide, the great gate at Miyajima seems to float on the sea. At low tide, you can walk out and stand beside it.
This is the torii (鳥居, shrine gate) of Itsukushima Shrine. The island itself was revered as sacred, and the shrine was built out over the water.
Shrine tradition dates its founding to 593. The gate is about 16 meters tall, and its main pillars are natural camphor trunks. The present gate was rebuilt in 1875.
In Japan, many of us know the floating gate from photos long before we ask why it stands in the sea.
