Anime | ツンデレ
A character who snaps at you, turns away, then quietly does something kind when no one is looking. Anime fans have a word for that.
Tsundere (ツンデレ) joins two Japanese mimetic words. Tsun-tsun is cold and prickly. Dere-dere is sweet and openly affectionate.
The word is said to have appeared on Japanese online message boards around 2002, from posts about a character in the 2001 visual novel Kimi ga Nozomu Eien. The type itself is older. Urusei Yatsura (1978) is often given as an early example.
In Japan, many of us grew up with words like tsun-tsun and dere-dere. They name a mood with a sound, and the sound does most of the work.
