Japanese Manners |

Someone in a Japanese office stands up to go home, and the people around them say the same word.

Literally, something close to "you must be tired." It recognizes the other person's work and effort, and there is no one-to-one English word for it.

Coworkers say it when they part. It acknowledges the effort they shared and helps keep the group in harmony. It can take the place of "thank you," and people use it when arriving as well as leaving, which puzzles many newcomers.

I spent 37 years working at Japanese companies. I still have not found the English for it.
