Colors of Japan |

There is a soft pink in Japan named after a bird.

Toki-iro means "the color of the toki," the crested ibis.

At a glance, the toki looks almost white. It is a large bird, about 70 to 80 cm long. When it opens its wings, a pale red-pink shows on the inner side and the flight feathers. That hidden color gave the name. Other color names grew from it, such as toki-asagi.

The toki was once found across Japan. Overhunting pushed it close to extinction, and today it is protected.

I suspect many of us in Japan know the name of the color better than we know the bird itself.
