Colors of Japan |

Could ordinary people in Japan wear the deepest purple? For a long time, it was kept for those at the very top.

Murasaki means purple. Koki-murasaki was the deep purple of the highest rank.

In the early 600s, twelve court ranks were set up, shown by the color of officials' caps, and deep purple sat at the top. The dye came from the root of a plant also called murasaki, and drawing out the color took great effort. Second came a lighter purple, then blue, red, yellow, white and black, each in dark and light.

Today, purple is still the color used to celebrate turning 70 or 77.

In Japan, many of us feel a little formal around this color.
