Places in Japan |

In Nara, deer walk calmly through the park and around an old shrine, quite used to people.

They are called shinroku, roughly "sacred deer."

The main deity of Kasuga Taisha, founded in 768, is said to have come to Nara from Kashima riding a white deer. Deer have long been honored as messengers of the god and protected around the shrine.

A genetic study found Nara Park's deer carry a type seen nowhere else on the Kii Peninsula. Researchers estimate they split off over 1,000 years ago and link this to that long protection.

I find it remarkable that a belief kept that long can end up written in the animals themselves.
