At Nikko Toshogu, the famous three monkeys who see, hear and speak no evil are carved on a stable.

They are sanzaru, "the three monkeys."

The building is the sacred stable for the shrine's horse. Its beams carry 16 monkeys in all, telling the story of a life, and the three are only one scene. Monkeys were long thought to protect horses. Monkey performers were brought to stables for prayers, and it is said horses settle down with a monkey nearby.

The three stand for early childhood. They carry a wish to raise a child without seeing, hearing or saying anything bad.

In Japan, many of us know these three well, yet few of us have looked for the other thirteen.
