Anime |

Watch anime for a while and you hear one name said with -san, -kun or -chan.

These are keishou, honorifics added after a name.

-san is the most common. It is close to Mr. or Ms., but fits anyone, almost anywhere. -kun shows closeness, used for male friends the same age or younger, and at work sometimes for younger or junior women. -chan also shows closeness, often for female friends the same age or younger, children and pets.

Using no honorific at all is kept for the closest people, a partner or a very close friend. So when a character drops the -kun, the relationship has changed.

In Japan, many of us notice the day someone stops adding -san to our name.
