Colors of Japan | 緑
At a crossing in Japan, the green light is called the blue light. The reason is very old.
The word is midori (緑), "green." One common explanation links it to mizumizushii, "fresh and full of life," and says it first meant the color of new leaves.
For a long time, green was treated as a kind of ao, "blue." In old poems, the green of trees was called ao. That overlap is still here. A green traffic light is ao-shingo, a "blue signal."
Midori is also a common given name. When many of us hear it, we think of something young and full of life.
