Places in Japan | 案山子
In one mountain village in Tokushima, the figures in the fields far outnumber the people.
They are kakashi (案山子), "scarecrows." The village is Nagoro, in the Iya Valley.
It began in 2002, when a woman who had moved back from Osaka made one in her father's likeness to keep birds off the seeds. More followed, many shaped like residents who had died or moved away. There are said to be hundreds now.
The village once had over 300 people. Now it has a few dozen. It is hard to reach, yet travelers come every year.
In Japan, many of us know places like this, where the houses remain and the people grow fewer.
