Places in Japan |
On one mountain path in central Japan, most hikers have come from abroad.
The path joins two shukuba (宿場), "post towns," on the Nakasendo, a road from the Edo period. Magome was the 43rd of its 69 stations. Tsumago, over the pass, was the 42nd.
The walk is about 9 km, around three hours. Japanese travel media say about 80 percent of walkers are foreign visitors, some of whom call it the Samurai Road. From April to December 2019, a local group counted over 53,000 hikers, the first time it passed 50,000.
Along the way, the stone streets give way to forest and two waterfalls, Odaki and Medaki.
In Japan, many of us think of the Edo period as long ago. Here it is a three-hour walk.
