Places in Japan |

On a hill in Otsuchi, Iwate, stands a white phone booth with an old black telephone inside. The line is connected to nothing.

It is called kaze no denwa (風の電話), "the wind phone." People come to speak to someone who has died and send the words off on the wind.

A gardener set it up in his own garden, wishing he could talk with a cousin he had lost. After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, he opened it to grieving families. More than 30,000 people are said to have come, though sources differ. A local group now looks after it with the garden. Visitors are asked to come quietly, as if putting their hands together.

In Japan, many of us still speak to the people we have lost.

これは風の電話(kaze no denwa)、「the wind phone」と呼ばれています。
