Colors of Japan | 藍墨茶 (aisumicha)
A deep blue-black, close to the color of ink, and yet its name ends in "tea."
The color is aisumicha. Ai is indigo, sumi is ink, and cha, "tea," was also a word for brownish dyed colors.
Despite the "cha," the color sits near gray-black. In the Edo period, when bright colors were restricted for townspeople, browns and grays were split so finely that people spoke of "48 teas, 100 mice."
In Japan, many of us pass over dark colors as plain. This one holds three colors in a single name.
