At a shrine in Saitama, the prayer plaques are covered with hand-drawn anime art.

This is seichi junrei, "pilgrimage to sacred places." Once it meant holy sites. Now it also means visiting the real towns, stations and shrines drawn in anime.

The shrine in Lucky Star was modeled on Washinomiya Shrine. New Year visitors are said to have grown from about 130,000 in 2007 to about 450,000 in 2010.

Fans leave drawings and messages on ema, the prayer plaques. Locals ask them not to enter private land, take photos from the road, or park by the station.

In 2016, the year of Your Name, it made the top ten of a national buzzword award. In Japan, many of us watched an old word find a second life.
