At an onsen, first-time visitors are often surprised that everyone washes before going near the bath.
Before stepping in, you do kakeyu, pouring hot water over yourself.
The reason is plain: the water is shared. So you wash first and come in clean. If sweat, dirt or soap is left on you, you may be turned away. Some also say washing first helps the minerals reach your skin.
Tattoos are another question. They have long been linked with organized crime groups, so many baths refuse them. Some places that welcome travelers accept them. It helps to ask first, or cover them with a patch.
In Japan, many of us learn this order as small children, long before we know why.
湯に入る前に、kakeyu(かけ湯)をします。
