Colors of Japan |
Japan has a traditional color name that simply means egg.
It is tamago-iro, roughly "egg color," a warm yellow likened to the yolk. The name is said to date from the early Edo period. That was also when the written form 玉子 for egg settled in and spread, around the time eggs were gradually becoming something people ate.
Not everyone agrees on which egg it means. One view says the yolk itself. Another says yolk and white mixed together, and another says the yolk of a boiled egg.
In Japan, many of us say tamago-iro without ever thinking about when it began. I like that a color name quietly kept a trace of what people had started to put on the table.
