Colors of Japan | 楝色
In the Heian court, dressing for late spring meant choosing colors in layers. One of those choices was ouchi-iro, the "chinaberry color."
Ouchi is an old reading for the chinaberry tree, Melia azedarach. Ouchi-iro was one of the kasane no irome, the color pairings made by layering a robe's outer face over its lining. It is described as pale purple over blue, or purple over pale purple, and was worn around April and May.
These pairings were named after seasonal plants and trees. At court, knowing which colors went together was a mark of education.
When I see the season and a color tied together in Japan today, I think of how far back that habit seems to go.
