Places in Japan |

Visitors to Japan often notice that hardly anyone eats while walking. Then they find a sightseeing street where people are doing exactly that.

The word is tabearuki, roughly "eating while walking." In everyday life, most people don't do it, so it tends to look a little unusual.

The reasons people give are simple. Food is something you sit down for, or at least stop for. There are also few trash bins on the streets, so wrappers have nowhere to go. Some link it to wa, harmony with those around you, and the wish not to get in anyone's way.

It is not a strict rule. It sits closer to "that looks a bit odd." So I think a street full of people snacking on skewers may just be a place where that feeling loosens a little.
