Colors of Japan |

There is a soft olive green among Japan's traditional colors, and it carries the name of a small bird.

Hiwa-iro means "the color of the hiwa's feathers." The hiwa is a small finch.

Dyers made it in two ways. One was to start with a yellow dye such as kihada or kariyasu and add a little indigo. The other was to dye with kihada and fix the color with iron.

The first method shows an old idea in Japanese dyeing. Lay a little indigo over yellow, and green appears from inside the yellow. The color even has a browner relative, hiwa-cha.

In Japan, many of us use names like this for years and never stop to ask where they came from.
