Colors of Japan |
A deep, grayish blue-green in Japan is called tetsu-onando. The puzzling part is onando, which points to a storage room.
A nando is an indoor room for keeping clothes and household goods. The color name has two origin stories. One says it was the color of the curtain hung at the room's entrance. The other says it was the uniform of the onando-yaku, Edo shogunate officials who looked after the shogun's clothing and furnishings.
The polite prefix "o" in the name is thought to come from that second story.
Onando-iro is an indigo-dyed blue with a touch of green. Tetsu, meaning iron, marks an even darker and grayer version.
Many of us in Japan say the name without picturing a storeroom.
