Colors of Japan |

Sangoshu puts two red things into one word, sango (coral) and shu (vermilion). I could not confirm where the color name itself came from, so here are the two halves.

Shu is a red pigment made from cinnabar, a mineral of mercury sulfide. In ancient Japan, people sprinkled it over the dead and spread it on the walls and floors of burial sites. Traces have been found at sites from the Yayoi and Kofun periods.

Coral is counted among the seven treasures in some Buddhist sutras.

Many of us in Japan say the word shu all our lives without knowing it was once laid beside the dead.
