Places in Japan |
Okunoin is the holiest ground on Mount Koya. The setting helps explain why.
The approach is about 2 km long. Under tall cedars stand more than 200,000 gravestones and memorial towers.
Koyasan was opened in 816 as the center of Shingon Buddhism. Today 117 temples stand on the mountain, and it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
You can also stay at a shukubo, a temple lodging. You sleep in a temple room, eat shojin ryori, the Buddhist vegetarian meal, and can join the morning service.
Many of us in Japan know the name Koyasan long before we ever make the climb.
