Places in Japan |
Only two pilgrimage routes are UNESCO World Heritage sites. One is the Camino de Santiago in Spain. The other runs through the mountains of Japan's Kii Peninsula.
The Kumano Kodo is a network of routes. The main one, the Nakahechi, is called the Imperial Route, because emperors and nobles walked it in the Heian period.
The routes lead to Kumano's three grand shrines, Hongu Taisha, Hayatama Taisha and Nachi Taisha. They joined the World Heritage list in 2004.
Along the Nakahechi there are inns and hot springs, so you can walk it in stages.
For many of us in Japan, Kumano is a walk we keep meaning to take.
