Places in Japan |

Travelers often say the same thing about the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. The walk is short, and it is crowded. So why do so many people still go?

The path is called Chikurin no komichi, the little path through the bamboo. It is free and open 24 hours.

Part of the answer is sound. When the wind moves, the bamboo creaks and the leaves rustle. The grove was chosen as one of Japan's 100 soundscapes worth preserving.

Arashiyama itself has been a retreat for emperors and nobles since the Heian period. Many suggest going early and treating the bamboo as one part of a longer walk around the area.

In Japan, many of us remember a place like this by its sound as much as by its view.
