Anime |

Watch a summer episode of almost any anime and you will hear it before anything happens. The steady buzz of cicadas.

Semi no koe means "the voice of the cicadas." In Japan it is the sound of summer itself. Add it to a scene and viewers know at once it is midsummer.

So it fills the classic summer episodes. Summer vacation, a natsu matsuri (summer festival), fireworks, a day at the beach. Fireworks carry their own meaning in anime, standing for fleeting beauty, memories, or feelings that are rising.

Cicadas have marked the season in Japanese culture since the age of classical literature.

For many of us who grew up in Japan, that buzz alone is enough to bring back a particular August.
