Colors of Japan |

A dark, reddish gray with a faint trace of purple. In Japan, this color has a name that reads like a small story.

Fujisusutake (藤煤竹), roughly "wisteria soot-bamboo."

Susutake is bamboo darkened to a reddish black by years of smoke from an irori, the old sunken hearth. Add a hint of wisteria, and you get fujisusutake. It already appears as a kimono ground color in a pattern book published in 1687.

It has relatives, too. Gin-susutake is a paler version, and yanagi-susutake leans toward willow green.

In Japan, many of us grow up with names like this and never ask where they came from. Smoke and a flower, in one word.
