Colors of Japan | 深緋
In old Japan, the color of your clothes could tell people your rank before you said a word.
Kokiake (深緋), roughly "deep scarlet."
Under the Yōrō clothing code, each court rank had its own color. The first rank wore deep purple, the fifth wore light scarlet, and deep scarlet belonged to the fourth rank.
So a deep red was not just a taste in clothing. It showed where you stood.
In Japan, many of us still feel that a color carries a sense of place. This one once carried a place in the court.
