Japanese Manners |

On a train in Japan, you may notice someone with a cough, quietly wearing a mask.

Masuku (マスク), and the feeling behind it, omoiyari, "consideration for others."

When people are unwell, many wear a mask so they do not pass it on. For them, the mask is a sign that they are thinking of those around them.

Some masks have another reason. A 2019 nationwide survey put the rate of pollen allergy at about 42 percent, more than two in five people.

In Japan, many of us reach for a mask at the first sign of a cold. It is a small way of keeping it to ourselves.
