Colors of Japan | 黄朽葉色 (kikuchiba-iro)

One traditional Japanese color has a name that means "yellow decaying leaves." It sounds gloomy at first.

Kikuchiba — the yellow of fallen leaves.

Kuchiba means decaying leaves. Dyers mixed gardenia yellow with madder or safflower red. A reddish shade was akakuchiba. A yellow one was kikuchiba.

Kuchiba appears in tenth-century writings such as the Engishiki. In layered court dress, kikuchiba also named a yellow-on-yellow combination worn in autumn.

I think many of us in Japan still find a quiet beauty in leaves after they fall.
