萱草色 (kanzo-iro)

Visitors to Japan may see a bright orange on old fabrics and never guess it is named after a flower they know: the daylily.

Kanzo-iro (萱草色) — the orange of the kanzo flower.

Kanzo is a plant in the Hemerocallis group, and the color is a light, yellowish orange. One way to dye it was to lay madder or safflower red over gardenia yellow. Another used sappanwood with alum.

The name has been in use since the Heian period and appears in The Tale of Genji. The same plant is also called wasuregusa, "the grass of forgetting." So one flower lives on in Japanese twice, once as a color and once as another name.

Many of us in Japan know the color without ever connecting it to the flower.
