Colors of Japan | 燕脂 (enji)
A deep Japanese red can be written with the character for "swallow," the bird. The bird seems to have little to do with it.
Enji — a dark red.
The word came from China and was written several ways with the same sound. One theory links it to Mount Yanzhi, known for safflower. The word itself may have Central Asian roots.
The red came from safflower, and later also from lac and cochineal insects.
In Japan, we use the word without asking why a bird sits inside it.
