Mount Fuji is a volcano. So why is it a UNESCO Cultural Site and not a Natural one?
Shinko no taisho to geijutsu no gensen — "an object of worship and a source of art."
That is part of the official title. Fuji was listed on June 22, 2013. The campaign first aimed for Natural Site status, but the mountain was dropped as a candidate in Japan's own review.
What carried it was culture. Fuji has long been worshipped as a sacred mountain, and it became a favorite subject of ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
I think many of us in Japan still pause a little when Fuji comes into view, even on an ordinary day.

【日本の名所】信仰の対象と芸術の源泉 (shinko no taisho to geijutsu no gensen)
