Watch almost any school anime and you will see it: a schoolgirl in something close to a navy uniform. It looks like a costume, but it is based on something real.

Sera-fuku (セーラー服) — the sailor-style uniform.

Its roots go back to the uniforms of the British Royal Navy in the 19th century. When girls' schools began in the Meiji era, students mostly wore kimono. Western-style clothing spread in the mid-Taisho era.

Around 1920, girls' schools in Fukuoka, Nagoya and Kyoto adopted the sailor uniform, and it spread across the country. Which school was first is debated. Kyoto's was a one-piece dress; Fukuoka's separate top and skirt is closer to today's form.

For many of us in Japan, the sailor collar simply means school days.
