忌み数 (imikazu)

Visitors staying at some hotels in Japan notice something odd about the room numbers: there is no room 4.
Imikazu (忌み数) — unlucky numbers.
In Japanese, 4 can be read "shi," the same sound as the word for death. 9 can be read "ku," which also means suffering. So some hotels, apartment buildings and hospitals skip rooms 4 and 9. Some buildings have no 4th or 9th floor. The number 49 is avoided too, as it can suggest "suffering from beginning to end."
Science has moved on, but many people still care, and the buildings follow their guests.
I think many of us in Japan do not truly believe a number brings bad luck. We still feel a little easier in room 5.
