Visitors to Japan often notice the care packed into a lunch box, rice at its center, small dishes fitted around it.

Obentō (お弁当) — a packed meal for one, carried from home.

Many families make one for someone close, so the box is a daily meal and a small message at once.

In anime and manga, characters eating or sharing a bento is a familiar scene, and a homemade one can show kindness or affection without a word. Some people even make kyaraben, lunches decorated to look like characters.

In Japan, many of us know the feeling of opening the lid and sensing someone thought of us that morning.
