Japanese Food |
Japan's first station lunch is said to have been two rice balls and some pickled radish, wrapped in bamboo bark.
It went on sale in July 1885 at Utsunomiya Station in Tochigi, the year the railway there was connected to Ueno.
This is ekiben (駅弁), from eki, "station," and bentō, "boxed lunch." It means a bento sold at a station or on the train.
Long rail journeys meant people needed to eat on board, and the custom grew from there.
In Japan, many of us still pick one up before a long ride. Opening the lid as the train pulls out is when the trip feels like it has really started.
