Visitors to Japan often reach for the door of a taxi, then watch it swing open on its own.
Jidō doa (自動ドア) — an automatic door. Here, the rear door the driver opens and closes from the front seat.
So you wait for it to open when you get in. When you arrive, you stay seated until it opens again. Pulling it shut by hand can strain the mechanism, so it is best left alone.
In Japan, many of us never touch a taxi door at all. We wait, and it opens.
