Visitors to Japan are often surprised that students clean their own schools, right down to the toilets.
Osōji (お掃除) — cleaning, here the daily school cleaning time.
At a set time, the whole school stops. From elementary to high school, students clean classrooms, hallways and their assigned areas. It is neither a punishment nor an optional activity. It is part of school life.
Teachers say it builds confidence and prepares students for adulthood. One voice put it simply: if you have to clean it up, you learn not to make the mess. The aim is responsibility and respect for shared spaces, not filling a staffing gap.
In Japan, many of us carry that habit into adult life without noticing.
