Visitors to Japan often find a glowing vending machine where they least expect one, on a quiet country road or deep in the mountains.
Jidō hanbaiki (自動販売機) — literally "automatic selling machine." Japan is said to have about 4.15 million of them, roughly one for every 30 people, and more than 2 million of those sell drinks.
They can stand in remote places because theft and vandalism are rare. Other reasons often given are a shrinking population, which makes staff hard to find, and the shortage of land.
In Japan, many of us walk past these machines every day without a second thought. A machine standing alone on a dark road simply looks ordinary to us.
